Folx has been a popular download manager for Mac over quite some time. The new version introduces a totally overhauled interface, along with a number of important feature additions, which brings it closer to being a true IDM alternative on Mac.
The new interface blends in with the default look and feel of OS X El Capitan, so it no longer seems like an outdated software. It’s also a lot cleaner, with the download list taking most of the real estate. The usual tag list is on the right, which automatically categorizes your downloads according to their types. Like before, tags are integrated with OS X, so that you can search them easily in Finder too.
On the top, there’s a sleek search+address bar, where you can paste the download URL or torrent link. Immediately below is a dropdown where you can filter the download list according to the status (all, downloading, paused, finished, etc.).
Once you add a download link (file, .torrent or magnet link) Folx will automatically identify the type of download and associate it with a suitable tag. You can also configure a few download options according to your preferences, before starting the download task. You can also integrate Folx with different browsers by installing the Folx Agent plugin for respective browsers.
New Features of Folx 5
Here’s what you get with the new version of Folx:
New user interface: As mentioned, Folx 5 introduces a completely new user interface, influenced by the default look and feel of OS X Yosemite / El Capitan.
A New icon: The new icon symbolizes speed, a key idea on which the software is built upon, i.e. boosting download speeds.
Password Manager (PRO): For many websites, downloading content requires you to login to your account. With Folx 5, you can save site-specific passwords and automatically download content from those sites, without having to enter the password again and again.
Set speed limit for a specific download task (PRO): The PRO version of Folx can use up to 10 download threads for boosting download speeds. But you can also control download speeds for specific downloads and set an upper limit for them, in order to optimize network traffic and bandwidth usage.
Torrent Search (PRO): The PRO version of Folx 5 allows you to directly search for torrents from within the application. Just enter a keyword in Folx’s search+address bar, and it will be searched in an extensive list of torrent trackers and a list of relevant results will be displayed.
Full featured torrent client: Folx 5 PRO is now a full featured torrent client, with a number of preferences added just for torrent management. You can set different folder locations for different tasks (for example, store torrents for current tasks in specific location, move torrents to specific location on task completion, automatically load torrents from specific location, etc.). You can also set Folx as the default program for torrent files or magnet links.
Improved Scheduler (PRO): The download scheduler in Folx 5 PRO has been overhauled for better usability. You can choose a suitable time for starting the download and set up how Folx will behave upon finishing the download: shut down the system, switch to sleeping mode, or simply quit Folx.
Folx 5 is available as a free download, but to unlock all its features, such as Smart Speed Control, Download Scheduler, Torrent client, iTunes integration and more, you need to buy the full version called Folx PRO.
