Usually, when you view someone’s Story on Instagram, it gets logged in the system and the person who shared the story can go back and see who has viewed their active Stories at any given time.

But, can you see someone’s Instagram Story without them knowing? As you might have already guessed, you certainly can! And there is more than one way to do it. And in this article, we’ll explore some of the workarounds to do so.

How to watch someone’s Instagram Story without them knowing

Here, we’ll check out four different methods to view someone’s Instagram Story without them knowing.

Method 1: Secretly glance at an Instagram Story

One of the easiest ways to look at an Instagram Story without anyone knowing is to trick Instagram into thinking that you haven’t viewed it yet. Follow the steps below to secretly view Instagram Stories.

View Instagram Story Highlights Anonymously

  1. Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android device.
  2. Tap the Story next to the one that you want to view.
  3. Tap and hold the Story to pause it.
  4. Slowly swipe towards the left to glance at your desired Story. Ensure that you stop swiping at the halfway point when you can peek at both the desired Story and the one you previously opened.
  5. Without lifting your finger, swipe back to the previous Story that you started with.

This will prevent Instagram from registering you as a viewer of the intended Story. But this method has certain limitations.

  • You can only view the first part of the Story if it is multipart.
  • You can only view photo and text Stories. Video Stories won’t until you fully view them.

Method 2: View Stories in Airplane Mode

Another way to secretly view Instagram Stories is by turning on Airplane mode before actually viewing the Story. Follow the steps below to use this method.

View Instagram Story in Airplane Mode

  1. Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android device.
  2. Open all other Stories preceding the desired Story so that the desired Story is the most recent Story available on your Story feed.
  3. Refresh your feed, and give it enough time to load the contents.
  4. Turn on Airplane mode from the Control Center (iOS) or the Quick Settings in the Notification Shade (Android).
  5. Tap on the desired Story you want to view. Tap right or left to see the entire Story, if it’s a multipart Story.
  6. When done, exit Story viewer mode by swiping down, and preferably close the Instagram app.
  7. Turn off Airplane mode.

Since the Story was viewed in Airplane mode, Instagram should not be able to register your view. The next time you open Instagram, the particular Story will still be marked as unseen.

But, like the previous method, this method also has certain limitations.

  • If it is a multipart Story, sometimes all the different parts may not be preloaded and available on-device when viewing them. Thus, you may not be able to view certain parts of a Story in Airplane mode.
  • If the Story contains a video, it may not be preloaded before turning on Airplane mode. So, you might not be able to view such Stories.

Method 3: Secretly view Instagram Stories with third-party web apps (iPhone, Android, Computer)

Certain third-party apps may let you view or even download someone’s Instagram Stories without them knowing. The advantage of a web app is that you can view and download Instagram Stories on any device, including a Mac, Windows, or Linux PC.

When you view a Story via these web apps, they don’t count as official “views” in the Instagram app. Thus, to the Story owner, it is still unseen by you. Here, we’re exploring a web app called StorySaver.net. But you may be able to find other similar alternatives through a web search.

The below steps will guide you to see someone’s Instagram Story without them knowing using the StorySaver website.

  1. Open the Instagram app, and note the username of the account whose Story you want to view without them knowing.
  2. Open StorySaver.net in Safari, Chrome, or any preferred browser on your iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, or PC.
  3. Type the username for the desired Instagram account whose Story you want to view, and click or tap Download.
  4. Verify ReCaptcha, if you’re prompted to do so.
  5. Scroll down to view each Story posted by the user that is currently live. You can also check out their Highlights available on their Instagram Profile.
  6. Click or tap a Story as a photo or video. Alternatively, you may also save them to your device by clicking or tapping the Save Photo or Save Video button corresponding to each Story.

One disadvantage of this method is that usually these websites only let you view and download Instagram Stories from public profiles unless they explicitly have an option to log in with your Instagram credentials. If so, you may even be able to view and download Stories from private profiles that you already follow.

Method 4: Secretly view Instagram Stories with third-party apps (iPhone, Android)

You can find third-party apps on the App Store and Play Store that allow you to search for an Instagram account and view, download their Stories. This also includes Stories from private profiles, provided you already follow them on Instagram.

Next, go to the My List tab in the app, tap the profile, followed by the Story you want to save. Then tap the Share button from the bottom-right corner and select Save to Files. You can then save the Story photo or video in the Files app at any desired location.

See someone’s Instagram Story without them knowing on Android

For this, we’re going to use an app called StorySaver, which is available from the Play Store. It’s developed by the same team who have created the StorySaver.net website. So, the steps are almost identical to those on the website.

See someone’s Instagram Story without them knowing on Android

One advantage of the Android app over the web app is the ability to log in to your Instagram account. Thus, you can view someone’s Story without them knowing even if they have a Private profile, as long as you’re following them on Instagram.

  1. Install the StorySaver.net app from the Play Store.
  2. Open the Instagram app, and note the username of the account whose Story you want to view without them knowing.
  3. Tap on the “+” button with the account avatar from the top-right corner, and follow the on-screen prompts to complete the login process.
  4. Type the username for the desired Instagram account whose Story you want to view and tap Download.
  5. When the particular account icon appears, tap on it and choose what type of media (Story, Highlights, Posts) you want to view or save.
  6. Browse the selected media type and tap on a particular media to view it.
  7. If you want to download the selected Story or Highlight, tap the Share icon while viewing and select Save to Gallery or Save to Files.

And this is how you can view someone’s Instagram Story without them knowing. As demonstrated, the workarounds explored here will even let you view Instagram Stories of Private profiles, as long as you’re following them on Instagram.

Note: Currently, it is not possible to view someone’s Instagram Story who has a private account and hasn’t approved your follow request.
